MATERIAL AND WORKSHOP PRACTICES

What Is Clay?

Made from worn volcanic ash, clays are soft mineral materials. Clay is the consequence of volcanic activity that has been exposed throughout time to a variety of physical and chemical environmental factors. Another way to describe it is as a finely grained, sticky, stiff earth that can be molded when wet and then dried and baked to create ceramics, bricks, and other items. The structure and composition of clays vary based on their origin. They originate from several sources, each of which has a distinct mineral makeup.
